About the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS)
The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) was established in 1935 and is one of the oldest and largest humanitarian organizations in Ethiopia. ERCS provides emergency response, ambulance and first aid, family reunification, essential drugs, water and sanitation, and disaster risk reduction programs.
The Society operates through a vast national structure consisting of 14 regional branches, 40 zonal branches, 180 woreda branches, and 5,871 Kebele Red Cross Committees, working in partnership with the Ethiopian Government, IFRC, ICRC, and partnering National Societies.
Overview of the Role

The WASH Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, and monitoring Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) interventions. The role leads the design of project activities, oversees technical staff, manages budgets, and ensures quality standards for infrastructure (water systems, latrines, MHM rooms, and rehabilitation of health facilities) in line with ERCS strategies, donor requirements, Sphere standards, and Red Cross/Red Crescent principles.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Program Planning and Implementation
- Coordinate the comprehensive design and execution of EC2 WASH project activities.
- Coordinate technical WASH needs assessments, engineering surveys, and feasibility studies.
- Develop detailed implementation plans, Bills of Quantities (BOQs), technical drawings, and work schedules.
- Supervise the physical rehabilitation and construction of WASH and Health facility infrastructures (WASH Fit).
Technical Support and Quality Assurance
- Lead, mentor, and provide technical guidance to WASH staff across ERCS HQ and regional branches.
- Ensure all WASH interventions comply strictly with national guidelines and international Sphere standards.
- Monitor construction quality and supervise contractor field performance closely.
- Ensure the systematic integration of protection, gender, disability inclusion, and accountability (CEA) into WASH programming.
- Contribute to the development of corporate WASH guidelines, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), technical tools, contingency planning, and emergency stock management.
Coordination, Monitoring & Capacity Building
- Coordinate with government offices, local authorities, the WASH cluster, and inter-agency forums.
- Represent ERCS in external WASH coordination meetings and high-level technical forums.
- Conduct regular field monitoring, track indicators, and manage data collection to prepare weekly, monthly, quarterly, and donor reports.
- Organize technical training for staff and volunteers regarding the operation and maintenance of completed WASH facilities.
Job Requirements & Qualifications
Education:
- Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, Nursing, Health Promotion, Health Officer, Epidemiology, or a related health/engineering field.
Experience:
- With Master’s Degree: Minimum of 7 years of experience.
- With Bachelor’s Degree: Minimum of 9 years of experience.
- Must have at least 3 to 5 years of coordinator or managerial experience directly within humanitarian WASH programming.
- Experience in the solarization of water supply systems (including solar-powered pumping and sustainable water infrastructure development) is highly desirable.
- Previous Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement experience is an advantage.
