Overview of the Role
The Medical Doctor/Team Lead assists in the implementation, management, and supervision of the Samaritan’s Purse Mobile Medical Unit (MMU). The role provides comprehensive oversight to the MMU clinical teams delivering life-saving essential primary health care for pediatric and adult patients in the program area.
The workload is intensive and requires managing daily clinic operations, supervising technical staff, ensuring infection prevention standards, and conducting rapid health assessments in fluid security environments.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care & Patient Management
- Provide high-quality primary healthcare to pediatric and adult patients, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for communicable and non-communicable diseases.
- Conduct clinical consultations, request and interpret laboratory tests, prescribe medications appropriately, and communicate clear dosage instructions to patients.
- Recognize medical emergencies, provide immediate initial stabilization, and arrange timely referrals to secondary or tertiary facilities according to protocol.
- Perform wound care and minor clinical procedures utilizing strict sterile techniques.
- Deliver standardized antenatal, postnatal, and neonatal care, and screen women and children for required immunizations.
- Maintain strict patient confidentiality, hygiene standards, and universal infection prevention and control (IPC) practices.
MMU Operations & Team Leadership
- Oversee daily MMU operations within the assigned region to ensure services align with organization standards and Ethiopian Government protocols.
- Conduct daily field visits to operational MMU sites to supervise clinical teams, check equipment functionality, and audit pharmaceutical supply levels.
- Provide weekly technical training, clinical mentoring, and dissemination of updated medical practices to MMU healthcare staff.
- Deliver culturally sensitive care and foster effective cross-cultural communication across all mobile clinic services.
Assessments, Monitoring & Reporting
- Assist the Program Lead in executing and supervising the health project in alignment with the overarching Health and Nutrition strategy.
- Support rapid health and humanitarian needs assessments, including joint assessments with the security team in newly identified response locations.
- Supervise clinical and registration data collection, verify database accuracy, and ensure patient files remain completely secure and up to date.
- Collate, validate, and submit weekly and monthly epidemiological reports to the organization, Regional Health Bureaus (RHB), WHO/UN agencies, and donors.
- Monitor, identify, and immediately report outbreak-prone diseases to the Program Manager and relevant public health authorities for rapid investigation.
- Represent the organization at the Woreda level in health and nutrition technical working groups and coordination forums.
Education and Experience Needed
- Education: Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from a recognized institution.
- Licensing: A valid and renewed medical practitioner license is mandatory.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of professional clinical experience in a hospital or clinic setting, preferably within low-resource environments.
- Previous experience working within an International NGO (INGO) sector is a distinct asset.
- Languages: Professional written and spoken proficiency in English and Amharic is required. Working knowledge of the specific regional language where the MMU is deployed is mandatory; knowledge of other national languages is a plus.

Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Physical Demands: Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, run, and maneuver across difficult field terrains. Must occasionally lift and/or move equipment weighing up to 100 pounds. Requires sharp close vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral depth perception.
- Work Environment: Operates in a fluid security context with frequent travel to remote field locations. Exposure to hot, humid weather conditions, moderate to loud environmental noises, and communicable diseases is expected.
