Job Description
Background & Context
UNDP Ethiopia implements its Country Programme Document (CPD) 2025–2030, supporting Ethiopia’s Ten-Year Development Plan and Home-Grown Economic Reform agenda. The CPD focuses on three core pillars:
- Economic Growth: Macroeconomic restructuring and private‑sector–led growth, including easing MSME financing constraints and supporting job creation.
- Sustainability: Climate change mitigation and environmental sustainability, including large‑scale reforestation and climate action.
- Governance & Peace: Peacebuilding, national cohesion, and governance reforms, including inclusive national dialogues and transparent public service delivery.
The internship program aligns with the UNDP Strategic Plan 2025–2030, which promotes prosperity for all, effective governance, crisis resilience, and a healthy planet, powered by digital/AI transformation, gender equality, and sustainable finance accelerators.

Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the assigned Team Leader, interns will perform the following tasks:
- Research & Design: Contribute to thematic research and support the development of integrated programme briefs and concept notes.
- Stakeholder Mapping: Support mapping of government, UN, private sector, and civil society partners relevant to CPD priority areas.
- Coordination Support: Assist in preparing materials for coordination meetings with development and implementing partners.
- Data & Digitalization: Assist with data collection, SDG indicator tracking, visualization exercises, and the digitalization of operational processes.
- Reporting & Content: Draft minutes, event documentation, human interest stories, and impact/lessons-learned briefs from UNDP Ethiopia’s programmes.
- Logistics & Events: Support the organization of learning events, workshops, consultations, and complete other assigned operational tasks.
Required Skills and Experience
Education Applicants must meet one of the following academic criteria at the time of application:
- Enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (Master's or higher) in Political Science, International Relations, Development Studies, Peace/Conflict Studies, Governance, Public Policy, Law, Software Engineering, Climate/Environmental Science, Engineering, Economics, Logistics, Management, Communication, or related fields.
- Enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (Bachelor's level) in these disciplines.
- Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and must start the internship within one year of graduation.
- Enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertaking the internship as part of this program.
Desirable Technical Skills
- Proficiency in data analysis tools (Excel, Power BI, R, SPSS).
- Familiarity with digital innovation, AI, or sustainable finance concepts.
- Strong writing, editing, presentation, and analytical skills.
Languages
- Written and spoken proficiency in English and a local language is required.
- Knowledge of additional local languages or other UN languages is an asset.
Mandatory Capstone Assignment
As a mandatory output of the internship, the intern will undertake a Capstone Assignment demonstrating integrated learning across UNDP Ethiopia’s CPD priority areas. The capstone will be developed in consultation with the supervisor, and the intern will present key findings to the hosting team and senior management before the end of the contract.
Conditions of Internship
- Status: Interns are considered gratis personnel, not UNDP staff members, and cannot represent UNDP in an official capacity.
- Stipend: A monthly stipend will be provided in accordance with UNDP rules. If financially supported by a third party, UNDP will pay the difference up to the standard stipend rate.
- Medical Insurance: Interns must provide proof of valid medical insurance.
- Employment Expectation: The program complements academic studies; there is no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.
